Professor at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory (BEL), Greece
Professor George K. Matsopoulos was born in Ioannina in 1965. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens in 1989. He received his MSc in Biomechanics in 1990 from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom. He also obtained his PhD from Bioengineering Unit & the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom, in 1993. From 1996 to 2008, he was researcher within the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems. In 2008, he was appointed to a faculty position as Assistant Professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, and in 2018 he was elected Professor in the same School. Since 2016, he is the Director of the “Biomedical Optics and Applied Biophysics” Laboratory and from 2022, he is also the Director of the “Biomedical Technology” Laboratory within the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. He has extensive experience in teaching Undergraduate Courses in Biomedical Engineering within the Schools of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and School of Applied Mathematical and Physics Science of the NTUA, as well as graduate courses in the Master’s Program of the same faculty, in the Interdepartmental Master’s Program (MPS) “Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine” and “Techno-Economic Systems” of the NTUA and Interdepartmental Master’s Programs in Biomedicine (Medical School of Athens and Medical School of Thessaloniki). Prof. G.K. Matsopoulos has supervised 15 completed and 15 ongoing Doctoral Dissertations (PhD) and over 300 undergraduate and graduate students. Prof. Matsopoulos has published over 180 research articles and book chapters and more than 200 papers in international and national conference proceedings. He has more than 20 years’ experience in participating, coordinating and implementing various research European and National projects related to the Biomedical Engineering.
